New & Reproduction Barometers by Edmund Czajkowski & Son Ltd.

Reproduction mercury stick barometer based on an original of c.1680.

We make both aneroid and mercury barometers. We use high quality movements in our reproduction aneroid barometers.

Mercury barometers contain a glass tube about a metre long which is filled with mercury. This was the general method of measuring air pressure until the mid 19th century when the aneroid barometers became popular.

In order to comply with the European Union REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008 No.2852 mercury filled reproduction barometers can only sold to trade, companies or businesses and not to private individuals within the EU. Unfilled reproduction barometers can continue to be sold to private individuals. Restoration or the sale of mercury barometers over 50 years old are not subject to this ruling. For more information please contact Edmund Czajkowski & Son Ltd.

Although originally not so accurate, the aneroid barometer could be made smaller and was more portable since it contains a small circular metal box containing a vacuum which is linked to a pointer. Changes in air pressure on the box allows the pointer to record the changes in the same way that in a mercury barometer, changes of air pressure allow the mercury level to rise and fall.

Michael Czajkowski, the owner of the firm, is an accredited conservator with the Institute of Conservation (ICON), a member of the British Antique Furniture Restorers (B.A.F.R.A.) and as such adhere to the best principle of conservation practice.

Below are some examples of our work, these are all made in our workshop.

Yard arm or angle (signpost) barometer, made in Mahogany, with thuya panels, and boxwood finials.

The mercury filled tube is bent over so that small changes in height, recording atmospheric pressure, results in a larger movement of the mercury along the shallow angled part of the tube.

Because of our church and public clock restoration work we also repair metalwork, handles etc as part of our furniture restoration.
